Shoulder pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which makes it vulnerable. Whether the issue is rotator cuff tendinopathy, subacromial impingement, or frozen shoulder, rehabilitation relies on progressive mobility work followed by strengthening.

Common causes

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Subacromial impingement
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Shoulder instability
  • Repetitive overhead work
  • Poor posture (rounded shoulders)

Common symptoms

  • Pain with overhead movements
  • Night pain when sleeping on the shoulder
  • Loss of rotational range of motion
  • Clicking or catching
  • Weakness when lifting

When to see a doctor

  • Pain after a fall on an outstretched arm
  • Inability to raise the arm
  • Visible shoulder deformity
  • Progressive complete loss of mobility
  • Persistent pain despite 6 weeks of rehabilitation

Tips to get started

Never push through painful overhead movements
Begin with pendulum exercises (passive movements)
Strengthen the external rotators before the deltoids
Correct your posture (shoulders back and down)
Patience is your best ally — tendons heal slowly
